WHY AM I RUNNING?
To re-establish Idaho as a sovereign state within the Unites States of America, and to promote responsible, limited government. There is a tendency for those in power to forget that government exists to serve the people, not the other way around. As a result, government control and social costs continue to rise and the cultural values of our heritage (like minimal government intervention, traditional family values, the rights of the unborn, etc.) get pushed aside. I stand in support of less government and the traditional values of our heritage.
WHY AM I A BETTER CHOICE FOR VOTERS THAN MY OPPONENT?
I believe the State of Idaho should be a sovereign state, not a mere subsidiary of the federal government. Additionally, my voting record dates back 9 years and I am willing to let that speak for me. One thing that perhaps offers me a unique perspective is my background. Although I am proud to be a farm boy from Meridian, I spent 20+ years of my adult life as a businessman, working and traveling in other states and countries. That experience has provided me with a pronounced appreciation for American and Idaho.
WHAT SHOULD VOTERS KNOW ABOUT ME?
I honestly view the role of being an elected official as public service. Being entrusted with such a role is an honor and a tremendous responsibility. I have a unique background, filled with Idaho roots, domestic and international business, and the state legislature. My senate colleagues across the state have entrusted me with a role of leadership by electing me as their Majority Caucus Chairman. It is especially humbling when BOTH constituents AND peers select you to lead. I do not and will not abuse that trust by making decisions based on a criteria of personal gain.
WHAT IDAHO POLITICAL FIGURE DO YOU MOST RESPECT AND WHY?
Former US senator Jim McClure. He was a man of his word. He was competent, diligent, and employed a strong work ethic. Sen. McClure was willing and able to work with anyone. He understood his constituency and represented it well. I worked for him in Washington DC; and although it was only for a brief period, a lasting impression was made.
WHAT LAW ENACTED WITHIN THE PAST THREE YEARS DO YOU MOST DISAGREE WITH AND WHY?
The passage of the federally controlled, state-operated health care exchange system. The health care exchange is the implementation tool for Obamacare, and as such is the largest single expansion of government control in my lifetime. It will strip away personal choice, free market solutions, and eventually result in increase costs and a decrease in the quality of care.
FOUR YEARS FROM NOW, HOW SHOULD IDAHO DIFFER FROM TODAY AND WHAT SHOULD MY ROLE BE IN ACHIEVING THAT CHANGE?
The private sector should be flourishing. Government functions should be streamlined, efficient, and operating ALONGSIDE the federal government, not solely as its subsidiary. Energy production should be a growing industry. My role in bringing this to pass is to stand for and promote with legislative:
1. Predictable, stable, and low cost burden on taxpayers; and
2. Free market principles
Idaho has all the right ingredients. The free market works…if we will let it.
